The prestigious School of Liberal Studies (SLS) under Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU) in Gandhinagar has the distinction of having a state-of-the-art media lab that caters to multiple creative purposes The lab was inaugurated on January 7, 2019 by senior dignitaries of the university.
It needs to be emphasized here that the modern lab is equipped with all the latest gadgets that are required to deliver practical training to any individual, who aspires to pursue higher education in media studies. Technology, they say, is the differentiator between average education and good education. The lab perfectly vindicates that point and ensures that SLS is ahead of its competition by a distance. It ensures that the students are confluent with the latest technological trends of the industry. While the lab has been designed to primarily cater to the needs of the media students, it also helps in realizing the creative visions of other students from across the university.
Built with immense care for the usages of both students and faculty members, the studio has all of pre-production, production and post-production facilities. It can be used for professional projects and hence it can act as the bridge between the academia and the industry. It has a Two- Camera (Sony PXW) Set-Up equipped with a Tele-Prompter and a Production Control Room (PCR). If need be, three-camera shoots can also be accommodated inside the studio. The Chroma Curtain is motorized and there are a few virtual sets that can be integrated with studio shoots.
The PCR has a TriCaster Vision Mixer, Yamaha Sound Mixer and a Voice-Over Unit thereby making it suitably equipped for the purpose for which it has been commissioned. The post-production facilities include Adobe Video Capturing and Editing System.
The available gadgets provide adequate facilities for the learners to become experts in cinematography, photography, editing and production. During their studies, students are taught how to satisfy the demands of the print, broadcast (radio and television), new media, advertising, public relations and event management industries. In order to accomplish this, specialists from the business are invited on a regular basis, allowing the students to benefit from their knowledge and expertise. Frequent visits to major media agencies are also arranged to add to the learning of the students.
The Media Lab helps in the creation of advertisements, doing outdoor broadcasts, practising mobile journalism (MoJo), creating photographic portfolios and doing media management. In addition to recording panel talks, the media lab is also used to record debate shows involving students and faculty members. Furthermore, the media lab comes in handy in the production of educational content, documentaries, short films, social awareness campaigns using visual media, and music videos.
Media studies has eternally suffered from a shortage of practical orientation not just in India but across the world. Thus, it was necessary to reinvent the wheel and come up with something unique. This media lab is an effort towards that end. It can be said with some confidence that the media lab has the potential to play an instrumental role in transforming the media education in the region.
